We're Working with Cover Oregon and the Oregon Health Authority to Help Residents Find Health Insurance

Home Forward is one of 31 organizations to be awarded a grant from the Oregon Health Authority on behalf of Cover Oregon to help people enroll in health insurance through Cover Oregon.

Cover Oregon is a new online marketplace where individuals, families and small businesses can shop for private health insurance and enroll in the Oregon Health Plan or Healthy Kids.

Home Forward will use the grant to reach out to its public housing residents and Section 8 participants to help them understand how to take advantage of the opportunity they now have for affordable health care. Staff throughout the organization will support the initiative by learning how to help people compare plans and enroll in heath insurance. They also will have the ability to help people access financial help to make it even easier to get the right coverage.

"Health insurance helps our residents avoid costly medical bills and be healthier, but many can't afford it, can't qualify for it due to a pre-existing condition or have a hard time finding a plan that works for them," said Steve Rudman, Home Forward's executive director.

People can begin enrolling as of October 1, 2013 for coverage to start January 1, 2014. Cover Oregon is the one-stop shop for health coverage, including those enrolling in the Oregon Health Plan. Oregon will be opening OHP to more adults as allowed by federal health reform. Fast-track enrollment is available to resident Oregonians who meet income qualifications for OHP and have already qualified for food benefits through the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) or health care benefits for children through Heathy Kids.
