Benita Legarza Joins Board as Resident Commissioner

April 12, 2012 -- Benita Legarza has been appointed to the resident seat on Home Forward's Board of Commissioners.  She replaces Amie Pico, who left the board to spend more time with her successful business, A+ Childcare to You Inc.

Legarza has been a member of Home Forward's Resident Advisory Committee for the past two years.  The committee provides a strong voice in policy matters for the people the agency serves in its different housing programs.  A single mother of four, she worked to put herself through college and will receive a bachelor's degree in Administration of Justice from Portland State University this June.  She is an active member of the National Low Income Housing Coalition and volunteers with the National Law Project, where she was selected to serve on a national committee representing residents that worked on legislation to preserve public housing.

"We are very pleased that Amie's business has blossomed to the point that she needs to devote her full attention to it and thank her for her service," said Harriet Cormack, board chair.  "We also are pleased to welcome Benita, who clearly has a commitment to developing policy that will help our residents achieve stability and success in their lives."

Legarza said she was looking forward to representing her fellow residents on the board.  "Good communications from residents to the board and from Home Forward to residents will be a focus of mine," she said.  "I'm committed to finding better ways to help my fellow residents understand the opportunities available to them as they work to improve their lives."
